Mr. Frogman keeps telling me he is having a rough time with math in school. For two years we have practiced multiplication and he just didn't get it. No matter how much memorization it took. I talked to our psychologist and teachers at his school who specialize in autism thinking it may have been a learning issue. As we focused on this and tried to find ways that would help him excel, I was just flabergasted. Not only that but I was inwardly hurt as I was always really good in math and science and hoped he would be too.
Now I know its not right to compare my child with myself, but like any parent I believe we all do in one way or another. I had accepted that my sons strong points were going to be hands on instead of mathematical or scientific, until recently.
His class started studying fractions. At first he was slower than a lot of his class. His teacher got him extra help in a smaller study group. After a while as he would ask me for help he would look at a problem, ask me for help and then suddenly grab his sheet back and write down the correct answer. I would look at him and make him give it back to me so I could work the problem to make sure it was right. After a week or two of making him write things out he would look at me and tell me the answer without writing anything down. He would get his homework done inside of a quarter of the time it would take me to do it. He has finally gotten to a point where he multiplies or divides in his head and whips out the answer. I almost can't keep up with him. It is absolutely amazing. Now if I could only get him to do that with writing next :)
