I Want My Financial Life to Work This Way

Its been an extremely boring day at work.  The same monotonous process over and over.   Answer the phone, work a call, type on the computer, same issue, now resolved hang up.  Just received an interesting call from a customer.  He has multiple pieces of our company equipment. His equipment was due for a mandatory update that our company provides and installs at no charge to the customer.

He calls up to ask...after explaining his situation..."Do I get some sort of credit or refund if I installed this update on my own?"

I explained, "The update you received could be installed by our company at no charge or the by you, the customer. You can choose to install it."  (This update is a matter of inserting a disc into the disc drive of the system and it will update all units connected to the system at the same time.  It might take 10 minutes or less).

"Yes, but if I install it instead of your company, will your company issue me a credit?"  He again asked.  I tried not to chuckle.

"No we don't, we provide these updates at no charge to you even if one of our engineers come out to install the update we do not bill for his time or the update."

He replied, "I think you should credit me for the work I did for your company."

"I'm sorry sir...that would be like me changing the oil on my car and sending a bill to Jiffy Lube for my service. Because they could have done it, but I didn't have them do it. I chose to do it myself."
Or..."Hey I fixed my own car!  Let me send the bill to the mechanic for doing his job!"

At this point he stuttered, I think he finally realized the realization of the question and stated, "Err, umm..thank you for your time.  Have a nice day." and hung up.

After hanging up and chuckling....I want my financial life to work this way...if I do something I should be able to bill someone for my services due to the fact that they didn't do the job they could have done if I would have asked them to do it.

Too bad our kids aren't born rich! I could charge them for all the things I do that they could have done even when I ask!  :)

Until Next Time
